Dream !t Do !t for Educators
The idea behind Dream !t Do !t is simple.
Whatever it is young people are passionate about, be it cars or computers or music or art, they can find a great career doing it in today’s modern manufacturing. But, in order to attract Mississippi’s best and brightest to one of manufacturing’s many exciting sectors — from biotechnology to computer software — we need your help. Recent studies show that more than 80% of manufacturers say their biggest problem is finding qualified workers. This shortage of workers could have a serious impact on our nation’s and our state’s economy. Even in today’s difficult economic times, the New York Times recently reported on a Conference Board study that shows available jobs in engineering, physical science, computer and mathematical science exceeding the available labor pool.
Today’s advanced manufacturing is a high-tech industry requiring skilled and talented people. The industry has changed. It’s not your father’s manufacturing any more.
Some of the world’s most advanced manufacturing industries have operations located right here in Mississippi. Job Hunter, produced by Mississippi Public Broadcasting in cooperation with the Mississippi Manufacturers Association and Dream it Do it Mississippi introduces Mississippians to the opportunities that exist in the state’s advanced manufacturing industry. Host Kerri Courtney takes viewers to manufacturers across Mississippi and explores careers at high profile companies in the automotive, aerospace, heavy metal, polymer and other industries. She also helps viewers learn where to get the skills they need to be competitive in the advanced manufacturing job market. Kerri visits Mississippi community colleges and universities along with the state’s job centers. A companion curriculum has also been developed for each Job Hunter episode for use by educators in our state. It can be downloaded here.
